Why I Choose to Give Up My Free Time to Volunteer as a Martial Arts Instructor

As a martial artist and an athlete competing for Team GB, the demands of training at a high level can be intense. Balancing my time between work, my own training, teaching, and family life is a constant challenge. Yet, despite these commitments, I choose to give up my free time to volunteer as a martial arts instructor. For many, this might seem like an added strain, but for me, it’s deeply personal and rewarding.
The Power of Martial Arts
Martial arts have shaped who I am today. Beyond the physical skills and discipline, they have instilled in me focus, resilience, and mental toughness. These lessons extend far beyond the dojo, helping me navigate the challenges of life, whether it’s in competition, the workplace, or at home with my family. The philosophy behind martial arts, particularly the dedication to growth and respect for others, has been invaluable in my own journey Volunteering is my way of passing these lessons on to others.
Giving Back Through Teaching
When I teach, I’m not just showing someone how to throw a punch or defend themselves. I’m helping them build confidence, develop focus, and learn to push through their own mental barriers. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness someone walk in unsure of themselves, and over time, transform into someone more confident and empowered.
For those who are struggling with personal challenges—whether it’s a lack of confidence, anxiety, or something deeper—martial arts can be life-changing. I’ve seen students, both young and old, begin to unlock their potential, and knowing I’ve played a part in that makes every minute of my time worth it.
Balancing My Own Training and Family Life
The choice to volunteer doesn’t come without its challenges. Balancing my own training schedule as a competitive athlete, my work, and the demands of family life can be overwhelming. My family, especially my wife and children, are incredibly supportive of what I do, but it’s a balancing act. There are days when it feels like there aren’t enough hours, and I have to carefully prioritize between personal goals and responsibilities.
That being said, teaching has a positive effect on my own growth as a martial artist. Instructing others forces me to refine my techniques, break down complex movements, and understand them on a deeper level. It’s a different kind of training that complements my own progress. While I give a lot, I also receive so much in return.
Why Volunteering is My Passion
I volunteer because I believe martial arts have the power to change lives, just as they’ve changed mine. It’s not just about giving people the ability to defend themselves, but teaching them the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, martial arts provide a structure that allows people to find inner strength and balance.
Watching my students evolve in skill, mindset, and confidence is the most rewarding part. Every step of their progress feels like a victory, not just for them, but for me as well. In teaching, I’ve found a way to give back, while also continuing my own personal journey. It’s a passion, and one I hope to continue sharing for many years to come.
